AMD and Intel are both designed to gently drop into the socket. There is no force necessary on the user’s side. The retention arm will hold the CPU for you. Pushing down on the CPU can bend them, and pins are very difficult to repair.

CPU Fans

A lot of coolers come with a plastic protector to keep the area smooth. Most people forget to remove this plastic film. Always remember to remove it; otherwise, you can overheat the system. The orientation of the cooler should always be in mind if you are using a tower cooler. Remember the size of your case while ordering the coolers for your computer.

Power Supply Units

Most people buy cheap PSUs. It is a very bad idea. It may even cost you more in the future. You should always go for 100 to 200 watt overhead over your total system power consumption.

If you are thinking of overclocking, you should always choose a good power supply unit. If you have a very limited budget, then downgrade your other components and get a decent power supply.

Thermal paste

Spreading your thermal paste may help you by reducing the temperature. You can decrease at least 3 to 5 degrees celsius from doing so. A heat sink will not be able to cover the whole IHS with thermal paste. You can do it easily by using a credit card.

Do not use a lot of thermal paste. The extra thermal paste on the motherboard can result in shorting it out. Some thermal compounds are non-conductive and non-capacitive. They will not harm your PC or Desktop.

Any other thermal paste containing metal can assist in heat transfer. Thermal paste is difficult to clean up. A grain of rice or a pea-sized amount is all you need.

Forget about the I/O Shield

The easiest way to avoid that is to simply install it right after opening the cabinet or case. People most likely get carried away and will only realize it after you have assembled your PC.

Overtightening the screws

This is important for your CPU cooler. If you have overtightened it, all thermal paste will spread to the sides, which is going to cause higher temps. You just need to tighten your CPU cooler up to a point you feel any pressure.

Installing Fans Wrong Way

Basically, you need a push-pull configuration. If you do it wrong, the hot air inside your PC will not be able to leave the cabinet or case. It will result in higher system temperature. You will need one or two fans to suck in the air and one exhaust fan at the back pushing the hot air out.

Graphics Card

Most people do not install the graphic cards on the right slot. You can not install your graphics card into any slot. For better performance, please insert your graphics card into the first or second PCIex16 slot. You can also use the PSIex8 slot, but do not go any lower than that. You will get a very choppy image and worse performance due to the lower bandwidth.

Power Supply Units Cables

Every cable has differently shaped pins. It is not easy to insert them anywhere on your PC. There are some places where you need to keep few things in mind. Do not plug in your 8 pin EPS cable to your GPU.

Make sure to double-check all of your connections before turning on your PC.

Some Other Common Mistakes

  • Skimping on airflow on CPU or Case vents.
  • Forget about static electricity.
  • Not balancing the build.
  • Cable management
  • Connecting your monitor cable into the motherboard while having a dedicated graphics card.
  • Check CPU generation support and required firmware version.
  • Pushing down on the processors.
